The Studley Grange Motorsports Hub is proposed for land at Studley Grange, 3 miles south-west of Swindon and south-east of Royal Wootton Bassett. The site is situated on a former waste site adjacent to the Great Western main line and a 3-minutes’ drive from Junction 16 of the M4.
The site will include:
· A 330m speedway arena to host speedway racing and training, with improved access and amenity for visiting teams, to serve as the home of the Swindon Robins.
· A racing specification karting circuit for recreational and competition use with a designated car park and observation area.
· Covered terraces and seating to cater to all demographics.
· Facilities for refreshment and recreation, including themed retail and entertainment, including a range of food and beverage options.
· A small complex of business units providing office, meeting and workshop space aimed at startup motorsport related enterprises, relocated away from the listed farmhouse to protect the historic environment and enhance the visitor experience.
· The full restoration and reuse of the Grade II listed farmhouse to be used as a meeting space associated with the business units.
· Over 200 permanent parking spaces, with on-site overflow capacity for over 500 vehicles during large events, alongside a coach parking and drop-off point.
· Sustainability and energy efficiency measures including EV charging infrastructure, repurposed shipping containers for all new buildings minimising embodied carbon, all-electric power and fully insulated to improve energy efficiency in operation.
Following the end of the public consultation on the initial proposals, the project team analysed all feedback submitted and carried out additional technical surveys, both of which have influenced the further evolution of the proposals. As a result, the following changes were made:
Parking and access
An increase in the number of parking spaces provided by:
· Expansion of main parking area, using additional available land
· Adaption of the karting racetrack for major event overflow parking
· Creation of further major event parking using reinforced grass.
· Improved access and parking for coaches on-site, providing sustainable travel options for large events.
Facilities and amenities
· Additional food and beverage units to provide easier and faster service and a greater range of choice for customers.
· Relocation of business units away from the listed farmhouse to protect the historic environment and enhance the setting for visitors to the farmhouse.
· Provision of additional covered seating terraces to enhance the visitor experience.
· Rearrangement of the speedway pits and competitors parking to improve secured access and amenity.
The Studley Grange site presents an opportunity to significantly expand Swindon’s leisure and motorsports offering with the creation of a multi-use site and an increase in the range and regularity of motorsports events and activities.
The site is located in an area with few residential properties meaning there are no insurmountable operational constraints related to noise and air pollution.
The site is also easily accessible for fans travelling from out of town, with sufficient space for an expandable capacity of up to 3,000 spectators.
Swindon Motorsports has acquired a 99-year lease, securing a long-term future for leisure facilities and Swindon Speedway.
A new multi-use motorsports hub
The Studley Grange Motorsports Hub will deliver a range of motorsports-related events and activities, including speedway and karting, with the option to expand the site in future. Crucially, the mixed-use nature of the proposal will put Swindon Speedway on a sustainable footing whilst, delivering a facility and operational model that is fit for the twenty-first century.
An easily accessible site with no revenue limiting operational restrictions
The site is situated in an easily accessible location in a large open area, close to the Great Western mainline and M4 motorway, with few properties in the immediate vicinity, in a natural bowl and adjacent to a former and now managed waste tip. As a result, it is not expected that there will be any operational restrictions that will affect the viability of the site.
Integrated facilities
The motorsports hub will feature integrated facilities and amenities to support the commercial operation of the site, including a business centre, a food court area for refreshments and merchandise, a club house and training opportunities with provision of a bar and café, a media control centre, and associated business units to complement motorsports uses.
Sustainability and energy efficiency
The proposals have been designed to integrate sustainability throughout the site, including through the use of solar panels to provide renewable energy, double-glazed windows and insulation to minimise heating requirements, rainwater harvesting systems for water irrigation and racing surfaces, and the use of recycled materials and upcycled furniture.
Supporting biodiversity
The plans will deliver a series of biodiversity enhancements and habitat creation to promote and support local wildlife, delivering a Biodiversity Net Gain over the 10% required in national planning policy.
Investment, job creation and training
The proposals will support hundreds of jobs during construction and up to 56 full-time jobs associated with the business centre and karting operation. A further 2 full time jobs and 29 part time jobs once the speedway facility is operational, delivering new opportunities for local residents and businesses and supporting the local economy and supply chains.
Our planning application will be determined by Wiltshire Council, the Local Planning Authority, in accordance with the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.
We submitted a planning application in July 2025 and recently received confirmation that application has been validated, with the reference PL/2025/06229. Swindon Motorsports and our technical consultants will now seek to work positively with officers at Wiltshire Council, alongside statutory consultees, to progress our application. It is currently hoped that a decision will be made on our proposals in late 2025/early 2026.
